What’s the Difference Between An Estate Home & A Cottage Home?

Homes come in many shapes, sizes, and styles. You can probably visualize a few when you think of certain types. For example, what comes to mind when you think of cottage-style homes? What about estate homes? If you’re having a little trouble picturing what sets these homes apart, we’re here to help. Green Key Village offers both and we’re happy to guide you through what makes them different.

Cottage Homes vs. Estate Homes

The definition of a house is a building structure used to shelter and accommodate one’s everyday living needs. Both cottage homes and estate homes are a type of house, however, they each have unique characteristics that make them stand out from each other.

Before diving into the specifics of our cottage-style homes, it’s helpful to understand their history to see how some of these characteristics came about. The term dates back to the late Middle Ages when English peasant farmers called “cotters” would live in them on large lots of land while working for aristocrats. They were defined by their small size, rustic look, and typical location in the countryside. Today, they remain on the smaller side, but thanks to modern updates, they’ve kept their cozy charm while providing more space and can be found in urban and suburban locations.

Our cottage homes sit on a compact homesite, but don’t let that and their smaller size fool you. These homes have plenty of features that make them a great choice, especially for those 55+ looking to retire in comfort and enjoy less upkeep than a larger home may require. Outdoor living is made easy with a sliding glass door leading to a cozy patio. They also offer wide front porches to invite neighborly connections and create a welcoming entrance. An alleyway behind the home and a rear-load 2-car garage are included for a cleaner curb appeal and charming aesthetic. The cottage home floor plans boast functional kitchens that are spacious enough to create your favorite cuisines. Because of the compact homesite and smaller layout, no space is wasted. There are 2 to 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms strategically placed to accommodate everything you need without feeling cramped.

Similarly to our cottage-style homes, our estate homes are a type of single-family home. Single-family homes are detached dwellings for residential use. Like the cottage home, they offer wide front porches catering to outdoor living, but they include more upgraded finishes and features (like a screened lanai) that set them apart. Additional upgrades include ceiling details for a modern style and upgraded appliances. The homesite is more spacious to accommodate a larger home, which is typically best suited for families. They come with oversized side-load garages and long driveways so there’s plenty of space for storage and additional car space for guests. Speaking of guests, our larger homes will have a few more rooms than a cottage home. They include 3 to 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a flex space that can be used for whatever you need.
