As a Floridian, you know that one of the best things about living in The Sunshine State is the beautiful year-round weather. Even the winter season won’t stop you from sitting back and relaxing on your lanai or front porch with a cold drink in hand — but there are still a few key maintenance items to check off your list before the (slightly) cooler months come around. Once you have these tasks squared away, you can enjoy all of the outdoor fun that Florida has to offer without a worry about your home.
Winterizing Your Home in Florida
Protect Your Plants: If temperatures reach freezing levels, make sure to keep your plants safe from frost. You can cover your plants with sheets, blankets, or materials like newspaper and cardboard, for no more than two or three days. You can also move potted plants indoors for the time being (just make sure to check the soil for dryness once you place the plants back outside).
Reverse Ceiling Fans: Your ceiling fans keep you cool most of the year, but they can also keep warm air circulating throughout a room when the temperatures drop. Set your ceiling fans to spin clockwise at a low speed to push warm air downward.
Replace Air Filter: The energy-efficient, fresh air system inside your home filters out stale air with fresh, conditioned air that’s free of outside pollutants and allergens. Therefore, it’s a good idea to periodically inspect your air filter for a buildup of dirt and dust. If needed, replace the filter to ensure that it runs efficiently throughout the season, providing the cleanest air possible.
Store Summer Essentials: If you know you’re not going to be doing as much grilling during the winter, make sure to clean and store your grill and related equipment to keep them in perfect condition for next spring and summer. This goes for any outdoor furniture that you won’t be using as much as well.
